Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are one of the most commonly used dental restorations out there. They are thin flat pieces of porcelain that can be customized to mimic the exact appearance of a tooth face. They are bonded on to the frontal face of a tooth in order to get rid of surface imperfections, cracks, discoloration, excessive spacing between adjacent teeth, etc.

What are the applications of veneers

Veneers can be used to restore teeth that are damaged and have issues with their aesthetics. Some of the common oral issues that it can solve are as follows:

  • Chipped teeth: A bad fall, a sports injury or a hard blow to the mouth can damage the teeth. They may lose a certain edge or chip near the corners, which makes them look displeasing. Veneers can be bonded to their frontal surface in order to restore their shape and form.
  • Cracked teeth: Teeth may crack due to sudden forces applied on them, such as during a collision. This can be extremely painful and may even lead to tooth fracture, which is why it is best to get them restored using veneers.
  • Spacing: One of the most common types of malocclusion is spacing, where the teeth are spaced too far apart from each other. The gaps left may lead to frequent embarrassment when you socialize with people. Veneers can be used to get rid of them and give yourself a perfect 10-tooth smile.
  • Discoloration: Teeth discoloration occurs due to the excessive consumption of colored foods and irregular/improper brushing of teeth. In most cases, they can be treated by teeth whitening solutions, but, when they don’t seem to give the desired result, a veneer can be bonded to their face to improve the appearance.

How is a veneer bonded?

The dentist would visually examine your tooth and take x-rays and scans to determine the severity of the condition. Next, a highly precise mold will be taken and sent to a dental laboratory to fabricate the restoration. Meanwhile, the dentist may place a temporary veneer in place until it is ready.

During the next appointment, the temporary veneer will be removed and the tooth will be cleaned thoroughly. The tooth will be etched in order to roughen its surface prior to bonding the permanent veneer to its surface. In case the veneer requires any changes, the dentist makes them and then, it will be bonded to the tooth with the help of dental adhesives. It will be hardened using a curing light and polished to improve the appearance.

Why should you choose veneers?

Veneers are excellent restorations in terms of resistance to stains. They behave very similar to the natural tooth enamel and would stay as good as new for several years upon proper care and cleaning.

They are highly durable despite being wafer-thin. They wouldn’t chip or crack easily when you bite and chew food normally. However, you shouldn’t use them to tear open plastic bags, or bite hard substances such as ice, nuts, etc.

They can be made to match the exact color and contour of the natural teeth. Anyone who looks at you smile would never know that you have got a restoration, unless you tell them.

They do not require the removal of a large amount of natural tooth tissues, as in the case of crowns.
